VI
Degrees
The Provocative, Shocking, Suspenseful
“VI DEGREES” is sure to provide an eye opening
look at controversial lifestyles including “living
on the Down Low”, extramarital affairs, former
inmates returning home from prison, prostitution, and
unprotected sex that are in some opinions attributed
to the high rate of HIV/AIDS prevalence in the African
American community . The play provides a sobering
look at disparate rates of testing and treatment of
HIV/AIDS in the African American community and seeks
to promote a change in these practices. A powerful
message in support of protected sex is also presented.
"I am working now, for example, to produce a new
play here in Philly that has received amazing reception
at a sneak preview we presented at the Painted Bride
recently. This very entertaining but sobering shockingly
serious play by local playwright Kash Goins, innovatively
pries the cover off of the DL scene and how it affects
a close-knit family, their best friends, and their wedding
plans. This one promises to be one of the hottest and,
perhaps, the most controversial tickets in town!"
- Walter Dallas, former Artistic Director of Freedom
Theatre.
A word from the Writer/Director: Kash Goins
"I hope you find VI Degrees to be interesting,
compelling, and provocative! I have served the
Philadelphia theatre community for the last ten years
most often as an actor, then as also a playwright /
director. Most of my theatrical joy has been created
at Freedom Repertory Theatre under the direction of
my mentor, Mr. Walter Dallas; who afforded me the opportunity
to create the characters of Bubbles Sweeny in “Sparkle,
the Musical”, Joseph (father of Jesus) in “Lazarus,
Unstoned”, and to discover the complex character
Cholly Breedlove in “The Bluest Eye”.
Most recently, I’ve had the opportunity to work
with G. Lloyd Morris of I AM Productions in gospel productions,
“The Dreamer” alongside the legendary Shirley
Murdock, and “The Butterfly Man”.
Parallel to the time that I’ve worked in regional
theatre, I’ve had the wonderful experience of
heading the Sharon Baptist Church Drama Ministry for
7 years, until 2007. That experience afforded
me an opportunity to help touch tens of thousands of
lives. It was also at Sharon that I was able to
write my previous social impacting drama – “The
Pastor and His Sign” which addressed the recent
rise of youth violence in Philadelphia and corresponding
“Stop Snitching” culture. While The
Pastor and His Sign was born of personal circumstances,
this production of VI Degrees is not. However, there
is no less emphasis on the importance of the subject
matter. VI Degrees is very unique to me in that
it’s my first production where in the creation
phase the written characters took over and didn’t
need my voice, views, nor experiences to speak.
I’m very thrilled to have traveled the journey
they have taken me on since I began to write it and
hope that you share that experience as well. I
thank GOD for breath, HIS will, Grace, Mercy, and HIS
given abilities. I thank my “Super Wife”
Tiffany and our three sons for unending inspiration,
motivation and support. I also thank my massive
throng of friends and family that continue to support
me tirelessly in each endeavor. With your support,
I will continue to produce works that allow us opportunities
to reflect upon the impact we have on our collective
state of being. And I will continue to be at the
forefront of this innovative and exciting new authentic
urban theatre genre."
